Untitled (Akio) , 2026
Acylic on canvas, fabric, beads, metal and ribbon
75 x 60cm
Untitled (Akio) is part of the ongoing Untitled (...) series, which explores constructions of masculinity through feminism perspective across Western and Eastern cultural contexts.
This work was inspired by magazines with pin up girls on the covers, which are prominently displayed and widely accessible in konbini across Japan.
In this piece, the female figure is replaced with a collaged male body with the same posture. Elements typically associated with magazine design, such as headlines and text, are substituted with layered fabrics, beads and ribbons.
Through this material intervention, the work disrupts familiar visual codes and repositions the male body as both subject and surface of display.
By translating printed imagery into tactile fabric form, Untitled (Akio) reflects on visibility, desire, and the commodification of gendered bodies within everyday consumer spaces.
