photograph from my family album that I had kept for years, believing the toddler figure in it was me. It turned out to be my older sister. I had also assumed the photograph was taken somewhere near my grandparents’ home in Chiba, Japan, possibly Kujukuri Beach. However, I discovered that it was taken in December 1997 at Santa Monica Bay, Los Angeles. The large sand berm visible in the photograph was temporarily constructed in preparation for the 1997’s El Niño storms. By examining the angle of the mountains and the lifeguard tower number, I was able to trace the approximate location of the beach where the photograph was taken. I reconstructed the scene digitally, with fragments of images such as recent Google Maps Street View imagery and Pacific Park (an amusement park built in 1996, which would have existed at the time but remains outside the original photograph's frame). The collage was then printed onto canvas fabric and sewn together, surrounded by a stuffed border wrapped in strips of blanket. Resembling a soft, cushion-like frame, the materials give the work a sense of warmth and familiarity, contrasting with the uncertainty of the memory it contains. Through this process of tracing, collecting and reconstructing, the work explores the shifting relationship between personal memory and factual evidence. What I had held onto as a familiar childhood memory gradually became something unfamiliar. Each plush is made from printed fabric and toy stuffing, representing the response of a simple interview question: "What object or thing do you identify yourself as?" in Bienno, Italy during artist regidency in 2026.Some chose a spiritual animal, while others selected tools connected to their job, objects they had kept since childhood, or symbols that represented who they became during difficult periods of their lives.Visitors are invited to interact with the installation by picking up the plush objects and rearranging them freely on the magnet receptive textile surface.The shape of the textile canvas is inspired by the river stones of Bienno. Just as the river continuously reshapes the stones through its flow, the installation reflects identity as a process of constant transformation, formed by time, place, and human connection. <img Traditionally observed as Tango no Sekku, families display symbolic objects such as Koinobori (carp streamers) and Kabuto (samurai helmets), representing strength, protection, and hopes for a child’s future. Historically, kabuto were worn by samurai warriors as protective armour. During the Edo period, the festival gradually became associated with boys’ growth and success, partly because the word Shōbu (iris) was linked to Shōbu (victory). Samurai families displayed helmets and armour in their homes to wish strength and prosperity upon their sons. Over time, this custom spread beyond the warrior class, and in contrast to the Girls’ Festival on the 3rd of March, the 5th of May became established as a festival associated with boys. In this work, the kabuto is placed at the centre of the composition, surrounded by layered fabrics made from used clothing. Removed from its ceremonial setting and sewn onto a soft surface, the helmet appears fragile despite its historical association with strength and protection. By rendering this charged word in soft materials such as fabric, stuffing, and decorative elements, the piece contrasts the harshness of online discourse with a playful and soft physical presence. The portrait is constructed by collaging together multiple “ideal” sample images, printed on A4 canvas using a home printer and stitched into one piece. This process produces a composite identity shaped by repetition and expectation. The work is illuminated by a fluorescent light placed on the floor in front of the piece, echoing the harsh, institutional lighting often associated with bureaucratic spaces. This lighting emphasises the constructed nature of the image while reinforcing a sense of scrutiny. The name “Daiki” is taken from the most popular boys’ name in 2003, referencing a generation entering the workforce in 2026. In Japan, job hunting typically begins over a year before graduation, suggesting that “Daiki” has already fallen behind. The work reflects the pressure to conform, the standardisation of identity, and the anxiety of navigating rigid systems of work and expectation. <img width="1500" height="2000" width_o="1500" 2026Fabric, toystuffing, beads and ribbon on wooden stretcher55 x 25cm 3rd March is inspired by Hinamatsuri, also known as Girls’ Day, a traditional annual festival in Japan that celebrates the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls. Households with daughters display sets of ornamental dolls, typically consisting of a female and a male figure that represent a Heian-period wedding couple. Hinamatsuri was previously known as Momo no Sekku (Peach Festival), as peach trees traditionally begin to blossom around the 3rd of March in the lunar calendar. In this work, the doll Obina (the male doll) is depicted alone at the center of the canvas, surrounded by a composition of various fabrics. These dolls are traditionally displayed as a pair and are rarely shown separately; however, in this piece Obina stands by himself. By isolating Obina from the traditional pair, the work reconsiders the symbolic balance of the Hinamatsuri display. Elements typically associated with magazine design, such as headlines and text, are substituted with layered fabrics, beads and ribbons.
